What is the True Cost of a New York Speeding Ticket?

What is the True Cost of a NY Speeding Ticket?

Speeding tickets in New York can be both complicated and costly.  The cost of a speeding ticket can range from about $45 to $600 depending on how fast you were driving above the speed limit and whether or not this is a repeated offense.  In addition, there is an $80 New York State surcharge imposed on any moving violations as well as a driver assessment fee imposed on drivers with 6 or more license points.

For non-commercial drivers, the penalties are as follows:

  • Driving up to 10 MPH (Miles Per Hour) over the speed limit can cost about $90 – $150, and add 3 points on your license.
  • Driving between 10 to 30 MPH over the speed limit can cost about $180 – $300, and add 4-6 points on your license. A driver may also serve up to 30 days in prison.
  • Driving between 31 to 40 MPH over the speed limit can cost $360 – $600, and add 8 points on your license. A driver may also serve up to 30 days in prison.
  • Driving over 41 MPH is 11 points.

It’s important to note that the DMV can suspend your license for accumulating 11 points or more within 18 months (regardless of violation type).  Furthermore, receiving 3 speeding tickets in an 18-month period will result in a 6 month revocation of your license.

The cost of your insurance can also increase if you were going over 15 MPH or if you had a previous traffic ticket violation.  In order to decrease the cost of your insurance (after a speeding violation) you may take a Driver Safety Class.
