In 2023 Speeding tickets were one of the most frequently issued traffic tickets in New York City, approximately 88,000 were issued across the 5 boroughs. Approximately 389,000 speeding tickets were issued in the Upstate regions of New York and 53,000 speeding tickets were issued in the Long Island region of New York.

As of November 7, 2014, the speed limit on all New York City streets is 25 MPH unless otherwise posted. However, as of April 2024, the most recent state budget deal in Albany may soon give New York City the authority to lower the default speed limit to 20 MPH on most streets in the five boroughs. The change would not apply to some of the city’s busiest streets and roads with three or more lanes of traffic heading in one direction. The proposal will likely get approved but nothing is final as of yet.

Speeding tickets have the potential to carry the most points out of any other traffic ticket issued by police officers, they can range from 3-11 points. The following is a breakdown of the point system and parameters for speeding tickets in the state of New York:

In addition to points, drivers convicted of speeding violations in the state of New York will also have to pay fines to the state:

• 3-point tickets have a minimum fine of $45 and a maximum fine of $150
• 4-6 point tickets have a minimum fine of $90 and a maximum fine of $300
• 8-11 point tickets have a minimum fine of $180 and a maximum fine of $600

Ticket fines are based on your previous record. Fines for speeding in a school zone or a restricted highway may also vary. Fines for work zones are doubled regardless of whether construction is occurring during the time of the infraction.

License Impact

The New York Driver Assessment Program imposes fees of $300 for drivers who have accumulated 6 points on their records within an 18-month period, as well as additional fees for any additional points.

Additionally, if you are convicted of 3 speeding violations for tickets received within 18 months of each other, your license will be revoked for a minimum of 6 months.
