yeilding to emergency vehicles

Yielding in New York City

It is very important to yield to emergency vehicles while driving in New York.  Ambulances, police cars, fire trucks, and some emergency tow trucks must be yielded to.  There are several obvious reasons for this, such as allowing police to pursue suspects, give ambulances access to the injured, and letting fire personnel gain access to emergency situations.  Yielding to tow trucks is also important because they are often in route to clear obstructing vehicles that are causing traffic jams.  Failing to make way for these types of emergency vehicles can result in a police officer giving you a three point ticket.
